FURNISHINGS WITH A STORY
Hello. I'm Sherrie.
My daughter took this picture of me with paint on my nose. I'd like to say this doesn't happen often, but it does.
The remnants of paint and stain come with my love of old pieces, which has grown into my love of re-designing furniture.
I've always loved old things. I like their history and the stories of the people who owned them. I've always felt a connection to the past and my family through these pieces. Our home is filled with pieces from my grandparents' and parents'. The sideboard in our dining room reminds me of hot turkey sandwiches at my Grandma Scanlon's on Christmas evening. The recipe box above my stove reminds me of making apple pies with my Grandma Newcombe.
When we moved into our home 20 years ago, my parents gave us their bedroom set. Made of solid oak stained a honey color, the set was top quality. The problem- the pieces didn't fit my vision for our space. This frustration led me on a quest to find a way to transform these pieces. I did lots of reading, took a class, filled my Pinterest page with hundreds of links, and began to experiment. The first piece I painted was a mahogany nightstand that had stood next to my grandma's bed. With a bit of paint and wax, I redesigned it into a side table for our living room. I was hooked. Eventually, by layering paint and stain, I redesigned the bedroom set with soft grays and whites that have worked in our space for years.
Old pieces hold our memories. They remind us of moments and people we love. The quality of the workmanship and materials used to make them is often far superior to what you find in stores today. So why do we leave so many pieces tucked away in attics and basements? Often,, it's because they need care we're not sure how to provide, or because we don't like the current design of the piece.
I am not a weekend warrior. I can help you redesign those pieces so that they fit beautifully in your home. I've done it with hundreds of pieces. This work is my passion. Whether a piece needs repair, painting, or staining, I can help you love your furniture. AND I love to hear the stories behind every piece.

Sherrie gave my old, tired furniture new life! The hand-me-down dull rocker with good bones that my husband was rocked in is now a beautiful bright spot in our walk-in. Our old, functional-but-hideous oversized dresser and hutch are now lovely, subdued pieces in our bedroom. Sherrie’s work saved them from certain ruin or waste. Those are their stories. 😄
Sherrie was meticulous and amazingly quick. Most importantly, she wanted our opinion but wasn’t afraid to offer her own, experienced one which was spot on! I can not recommend her services enough.

Thank you, Sherrie (@ Furnishings with a Story) for giving this 1961 dresser a new life! This poor thing had some pretty nasty water stains and original hardware so grimey it looked black. You guys, I have painted (and repainted) plenty of furniture before, that’s not really what Sherrie does. She follows ALL the right steps and uses great skill and patience to truly restore. I’m already picking out my next piece to bring to Sherrie.

Sherrie is the best. I had such an amazing experience working with her! She repainted my desk and truly brought it back to life. From start to finish, her communication was excellent — she kept me updated every step of the way and made sure I was happy with every detail. You can tell she takes real pride in her work — the attention to detail is incredible, and the finished piece is absolutely beautiful. On top of that, she was so kind throughout the whole process making sure our visions matched. I can’t recommend her enough if you’re looking for someone who combines talent, care, and professionalism

We first found Sherrie when we were looking for someone to bring my childhood bedroom set back to life for my 2 year old daughter. Working with Sherrie was a dream: she is so talented, thoughtful, detailed, and incredibly understanding. The bedroom set was perfect, so a few months later, we worked with her again to make our bedroom set look like a pottery barn dupe! I am so obsessed!! I love old furniture so I can’t wait to work with Sherrie again in the future!

We couldn't be happier with our newly painted/refreshed kitchen cabinets! I was mostly familiar with Sherrie's amazing work reimagining and restoring individual pieces, and it turns out she is just as talented at larger projects. The cabinets were actually a meticulous 2-week process that included many steps, the end result of which was several people asking me from photos if they were brand new.
Also part of Sherrie's process: a fair amount of practical and emotional support in the form of calls, texts, visits, etc....toward the end, I started calling her my home improvement therapist. Someone like Sherrie acting as a true partner made an immeasurable difference to not just the end result, but our comfort along the way.
We recently decided our livingroom furniture could use a refresh and are excited to have the opportunity to work with Sherrie again.
